Two-time NBA champ J.R. Smith remains in Texas jail following arrest

One of basketball’s beloved and infamous figures had yet another run-in with the law in Texas early Tuesday morning.

Former two-time NBA champion and Sixth Man of the Year winner J.R. Smith was arrested in Hunt County on a charge of family violence. Smith, 41, was arrested on a charge of assault causing bodily injury and family violence, according to county records. TMZ first reported details of the arrest.

Smith, who played 16 seasons in the NBA across five teams, is currently being held at the Hunt County Detention Center, as records show no bond has been set yet.

Authorities have not disclosed where the alleged incident occurred, Smith’s relationship to the alleged victim or what injuries were reported. It also remains unclear which agency arrested Smith or when he will first appear in court.

Hunt County officials did not respond to a request for comment by the time of publication. Authorities have not released details about the alleged incident or identified the alleged victim.

Smith has faced several previous legal issues, though previous cases did not involve violence, as he was charged with reckless driving in 2007 involving a deadly car accident that resulted in the death of his friend, Andre Bell. Smith would serve 24 days in prison. In 2018, Smith was issued a desk ticket for misdemeanor criminal mischief for throwing a fan’s cellphone into a construction site. Smith accepted a deal to pay the fan $600 in restitution.

The high-flying guard won titles with the Cleveland Cavaliers in 2016 and with the Los Angeles Lakers in 2020. Smith, who has not played in the NBA since the 2020 Finals, seemed to find peace and harmony away from basketball by enrolling at North Carolina A&T and playing on the school’s golf team. In 2026, Smith graduated from the historically black college with a degree in liberal studies.
