Two remarkable Indian-origin women have been honored in Singapore for their groundbreaking achievements at the annual “Her World” awards ceremony. Justice Judith Prakash, aged 72, received the prestigious title of ‘Her World Woman of the Year 2024’ for her pioneering contributions to the legal field. As Singapore’s first female Judge of Appeal, she has significantly impacted the judiciary since her appointment to the Supreme Court Bench in 1992, authoring around 645 judgments, many of which have shaped legal precedents in the country.
Justice Prakash has been a trailblazer for aspiring female lawyers, playing a vital role in establishing Singapore as a global arbitration hub through her involvement in the International Arbitration Act of 1994. Upon receiving her award, she expressed gratitude for a career that has not only challenged her intellectually but also allowed her to contribute to Singapore’s legal landscape.
Meanwhile, national sprinter Shanti Pereira, 28, was awarded ‘Her World Young Woman Achiever 2024’ for her outstanding accomplishments in athletics. Recently competing in the Paris Olympics, Pereira has overcome significant challenges, including injuries and scholarship losses. She made a remarkable comeback by setting national records in the 100m and 200m events and winning gold and silver medals at the 2023 Asian Games—the first track and field gold for Singapore since 1974.
Pereira now holds national records across all four sprint categories: 60m, 100m, 200m, and 400m. She aims to inspire young girls and athletes by encouraging them to pursue their dreams without limitations.
Both women exemplify resilience and excellence in their fields, serving as role models for future generations in Singapore and beyond.
