New Delhi: Uttar Pradesh election office has suspended poll officials in Pilibhit after multiple duplication of names were found in certain areas. The action comes hours after the UP Congress alleged manipulation of 16,554 votes in Pilibhit Sadar and sought Supreme Court’s intervention to halt ongoing Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls.

The office of UP’s Chief Electoral Officer said that, taking swift cognizance of a complaint regarding the display of details of another voter against the EPIC numbers of voters listed in the voter list of Assembly Constituency 127-Pilibhit, the matter was investigated through the District Election Officer, Pilibhit. Upon subsequent checks in the voter list of this assembly it was found that certain voters’ EPIC numbers online displayed details of other voters. CEO office said instructions have been issued to immediately rectify such errors and to remove the Electoral Registration Officer (ERO) and voter registration centre operator from duties. Legal action also has been initiated against these persons.

“At the same time, instructions have been given to provide a clear report regarding the responsibilities of the Assistant Electoral Registration Officers of this assembly constituency. The District Election Officer, Pilibhit, has been directed to conduct a thorough review of the voter lists of all assembly constituencies in the district on this point and submit a detailed report within two days. All District Election Officers of Uttar Pradesh have been directed to take note of this matter, conduct a thorough review of the voter lists of all assembly constituencies in their districts on this point, and furnish a report within two days,” the CEO office said.

Addressing a press conference in Lucknow on Wednesday, Congress alleged that the Election Commission had created a system through which “anyone can be defeated, and anyone can be made to win”. The party claimed that after the final draft of the SIR, the electoral roll was published on April 10, 2026, and changes were made to voter details between July and September without altering their EPIC and serial numbers.

Congress in-charge for UP Rajendra Pal Gautam alleged, “A voter sees his name, address, EPIC number and serial number in the final draft and assumes that his vote is secure. But if the name is changed later, he may be told on polling day that his name is not in the electoral roll despite having an EPIC card and identity proof.” He claimed that in Pilibhit Sadar, names of 13,150 voters were changed, 884 names were deleted despite the voters continuing to reside there, and 2,600 names were added of people who allegedly did not live in the area. This, according to him, amounted to manipulation involving 16,554 votes.

Mr. Gautam mentioned that Congress workers were preparing booth-wise lists of such cases and claimed that similar irregularities could have occurred in other Assembly constituencies as well.
