Kallakurichli:More than 600 families living in villages near the Kalvarayan Hills in Kallakurichi district have urged the State government to lay a tar road connecting Vilaanelli with Puthupalapattu, saying the lack of proper road connectivity is affecting access to healthcare, education and essential supplies. Residents of Vilaanelli, Perumbur, Bakkanam and surrounding villages in the Sankarapuram Assembly constituency currently depend on a mud road to reach Puthupalapattu, located around 10 km away. However, for several essential needs, they are forced to take a circuitous route through Serapattu, travelling nearly 50 km.
According to the villagers, the long detour poses a serious problem during medical emergencies, particularly in cases of road accidents or snake and other venomous bites. They said precious time was lost while transporting patients to hospitals, potentially putting lives at risk. The villagers said better road connectivity would also help them transport agricultural inputs and farm produce, besides making it easier to access essential commodities such as rice, pulses and vegetables. School and college students also face difficulties in commuting, they said. The lack of road connectivity has also affected primary education in the area. A government primary school in the locality was reportedly closed around five years ago as teachers found it difficult to travel to the village. Children now have to travel nearly 6 km to attend primary school, according to residents.
The villagers said a tar road from Vilaanelli to Puthupalapattu would improve access to education and enable teachers to reach the area more easily.
They have appealed to Chief Minister, C Joseph Vijay and Kallakurichi Collector and the district in-charge Minister to inspect the area and take steps to convert the existing mud road into a tar road, saying the project would improve the livelihood and safety of people living in the hill region.
