The Fremantle Dockers have been given the all-clear to use the club’s famous “Wharfie Time” motivator during Saturday’s AFL grand final against Brisbane.
But there’s a catch: the AFL is allowing the Dockers to use the spine-tingling intro from AC/DC’s Hell’s Bell’s just once after a goal as part of the celebrations.
9News Perth reporter Paddy Sweeney said the league believed the Dockers and Lions had two of the best game-day fan engagement experiences, which it wanted to be part of what is shaping to be a grand final for the history books.
“Wharfie Time”, which had its genesis in a rousing speech from former Dockers captain Matthew Pavlich, has been deployed twice this season so far.
The motivator, which is played when the margin is tight and the clock is running down, helped lift the Dockers to victory over Hawthorn in round 9, and was also played in the final minutes of the team’s win over Geelong in the semi-final.
It has only ever been deployed at Optus Stadium, with lights and screens blaring into action and the crowd erupting into rapturous support to transform the venue into “Fortress Fremantle”.
