Government to be gifted prime Fremantle land as idle trust wound up
The Cook government is preparing to hand down its state budget tomorrow, and the spending announcements are flowing in thick and fast.
Housing is shaping as a key focus, with news at the weekend that $2 billion would be tipped into several projects in a bid to make it easier for first-home buyers to get a foot on the property ladder.
And this morning we’re kicking off with news a prime parcel of land in Fremantle will be gifted to the government as a long-dormant trust is wound up.
The wind-up is set to hand Labor a cool $40 million in the short term, which Education Minister Sabine Winton and Lands Minister John Carey said would be spent on targeted upgrades and maintenance in public schools.

Dr Kyle Hoath, the head of the state’s peak medical body the Australian Medical Association WA, has urged the Cook government to invest in people as well as infrastructure.
Labor recently announced a $1.5 billion spend in health infrastructure as part of the 2026-2027 budget, taking the state’s total investment to $5.5 billion over the forward estimates.
