Kolkata: Triggering a suspense, West Bengal minister Tapas Roy claimed on Tuesday that Trinamul Congress has “broken apart” in a fate “like Maharashtra”, in his veiled reference to the two Shiv Sena factions. The Manicktala BJP MLA also predicted that expelled TMC MLA of Uluberia East in Howrah, Ritabrata Banerjee, went to meet Assembly Speaker Rathindra Bose with 50 legislators among the 80 from Mamata Banerjee’s party, apparently for their exit to launch a separate outfit.
Mr Banerjee, however, rejected Mr Roy’s claims and offered take the responsibility of only him and Entally MLA Sandipan Saha, who was also axed by TMC on Monday for complaining to Mr Bose against their party for allegedly forging their signatures to endorse their fellow Sovandeb Chattopadhyay’s name as leader of the opposition.
Mr Roy stated in a Facebook post, “Trinamul Congress has broken apart. Trinamul is in a fate like Maharashtra. Ritabrata already reached the Assembly Speaker with almost 50 TMC MLAs. Game on.” He later told the media, “TMC’s condition is pathetic. It has been divided into two. All are making a ‘defy, deny’ approach to Mamata and Abhishek. TMC is a party which should cease to exist and it will.”
He added, “TMC concentrates on one family only. Its MLAs can think about their future if it winds up. Options are there. There is also a law. Ritabrata has taken an initiative and made a move to the Assembly secretary as the Speaker was not there. The Speaker will take a decision on the matter.”
Asked about the BJP MLA’s claims, Mr Banerjee said while visiting the Assembly, “These are all speculations. I came here for work. I can take responsibility only for myself and Sandipan. Ms Banerjee has built TMC, which, however, lost its grassroot connection while functioning in a corporate structure run by Abhishek Banerjee. The entire party has been hijacked by a corporate organisation.”
Meanwhile, TMC sent a fresh letter to Assembly Speaker to urging him to recognise Mr Chattopadhyay as the leader of the opposition and Asima Patra and Nayana Bandyopadhyay as his deputies and Firhad Hakim as party chief whip, with references to practice, procedure and precedence at the House.
