Western Kentucky vs. Sam Houston State prediction: Hilltoppers have edge in pick’em game

Western Kentucky has been a picture of consistency this decade. The Hilltoppers have won eight or nine games in each of the last five seasons, and they’ve won at least six conference games in five of Tyson Helton’s seven campaigns as head coach.

Those streaks may be in jeopardy.

Western Kentucky has started the season 2-4 overall and is 1-1 in Conference USA play. The Hilltoppers face a tricky trip to Sam Houston State on Wednesday night.

Oddsmakers have marked this contest at Elliott T. Bowers Stadium as a coin flip.

Very few teams came into 2026 with lower expectations than Sam Houston State. The Bearkats won 10 games in 2024 under K.C. Keeler, but he departed for Temple soon thereafter, and forced the program to hit the reset button. That’s a hard thing to do at any program, but it’s especially difficult in the bottom portion of the Group of 6.

Predictably, 2025 was a mess. Phil Longo watched his team fall apart week after week, losing 10 games, with nine of those defeats coming by at least 14 points.

With no wind in their sails, SP+ ranked Sam Houston State No. 136 out of 138 in the preseason.

Things have gone better than expected in Huntsville.

It may not sound like much, but Sam Houston State (1-4) has been a tough out so far. They lost by one score to Troy and Tulsa, and hung with Texas Tech through the first half.

Nobody will throw a parade for those results, but they were steps in the right direction for Longo, and those performances should inspire confidence as Sam Houston takes on other struggling teams, like Western Kentucky.

The numbers for the Hilltoppers and Bearkats are similarly bleak. Western Kentucky boasts the 107th-best offense and 120th-best defense this season by SP+, while Sam Houston State’s offense is No. 120, and the defense is just a shade better at 119th. These are ugly numbers across the board, so no wonder this one is essentially priced as a pick’em.

However, the main difference between these two teams is the direction they’re seemingly headed. Western Kentucky was able to turn things around with a bounce-back effort against Missouri State, while the Bearkats were only able to muster three points against Liberty last Thursday.

In a coin-flip game, that momentum is enough to justify a wager on a team that was projected to be a two-score favorite in this game according to most preseason power rankings.
