There was a charity softball game back on May 30 at a minor league baseball stadium in Pomona with many current Giants players in attendance. They were there to hang out together and to support teammate Brian Burns, who sponsored the event.
The teams were split — today’s Giants vs. older players from the 2007 and 2011 Super Bowl teams. Burns “coached” one team. Former Giants running back Brandon Jacobs directed the veteran squad.
There were hoots and hollers and good-natured ribbing from one side to the other. During the actual game, there were sweet swings and nice fielding plays — Jaxson Dart can pick it — and also cuts that made you wonder: Has he ever picked up a bat before? Some ground balls were fumbled and popups dropped. There were over-the-top celebrations for highlights big and small. Running back Cam Skattebo enjoyed his jog around the bases after smacking one over the fence and stuck the landing on a backflip at home plate that should allay concerns about his rehab from a dislocated ankle.
When running back Tyrone Tracy Jr. hit one out, Dart and Malik Nabers waited for him down the third-base line and then followed him home in a conga-line procession that could have been the invention of middle school kids.
