INGLEWOOD, Calif. − The New York Giants suffered through a nightmare of a performance against the Los Angeles Rams on “Monday Night Football,” including the loss of their most valuable player.

And with that, John Harbaugh’s team absorbed an emotional blow to their chances at registering an upset victory and staying undefeated when quarterback Jaxson Dart went to the sideline with a knee injury in the first quarter.

Here are things we learned from the Giants’ 28-6 setback to the Rams, their first loss of the Harbaugh era:

Giants will go only as far as Jaxson Dart goes

Jameis Winston is arguably the best backup quarterback in the league, but these Giants will only go as far as Dart can take them. General manager Joe Schoen reportedly told the ESPN broadcast during the game that Dart will be OK, and Dart spent most of the second half watching the game from the sideline.

The severity of Dart’s injury is yet to be determined, likely with more tests. That said, the Giants spent months putting together an offense that fit the strengths of their 23-year-old quarterback, who played great in Week 1.

If Winston has to start next week against the Tennessee Titans and beyond, the Giants are going to have to reinvent themselves.

Things went from bad to worse on Giants injury front

Jaxson Dart’s knee injury was bad enough. Then Malik Nabers went out with a shoulder injury, but he returned.

In the fourth quarter, two more Giants cornerstones went down. Left tackle Andrew Thomas was slow to get up on back-to-back plays on the Giants’ final possession. He was limited in practice this week with what was listed as an ankle injury.

Then, late in the fourth quarter, Brian Burns had his left ankle pinned underneath another player’s knee and needed significant help from medical personnel to leave the field. He needed assistance in getting to the cart in order to get back to the locker room.

Sean McVay still has no qualms about beating the Giants

Rams coach Sean McVay has won all five games he has coached against the Giants, and his Rams have put a number on Big Blue seemingly each and every time. There is some history, of course, with the Giants having fired McVay’s grandfather, John, as head coach during the 1978 season. In those five games, with four different coaches, McVay and the Rams have outscored the Giants by a cumulative score of 160-68.

Jevon Holland: Making plays on the back end

Jevon Holland is a different player for the Giants this year. He has two interceptions in two games, including one Monday night, and he has forced two fumbles, recovering one on his own.
