The Osmonds shot to fame in the 1970s with Utah brothers Wayne, Merrill, Jay, Jimmy, Donny and Alan achieving huge success together and as solo artists

Before the Jonas Brothers made a name for themselves as a band of brothers, there were The Osmonds. After appearing on The Andy Williams Show in 1962, Wayne, Merrill, Alan and Jay Osmond’s barbershop quartet became an overnight success. Over the years, the brothers, later joined by other siblings, would earn a place as one of the best known teen pop bands in the world. But where are they now?

The pop phenomenon saw huge success in the 1970s. The initial quartet were joined by younger brothers Donny and Jimmy to rock across the stage in matching white jumpsuits. Sister Marie would also perform with them occasionally. Since the 2000s, Alan’s son David has sometimes joined the group in place of Donny.

As a band, The Osmond family have been honoured for their achievements with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Separately, they’ve gone in different directions, with one earning a Grammy nomination, one doing a Mormon mission in Washington DC, and one dying in 2026.

Alan Osmond

Alan was the eldest of the Osmond brothers to be in the band and the third eldest of the whole family, after George Virl and Tom, who were both the first deaf missionaries of the Mormon church.

Alan died in aged 76 in 2026, with his family confirming it on 21 April. The singer had been living with Multiple Sclerosis (MS) since his diagnosis in 1987. In a statement, the family said: “His positive outlook was an inspiration to many, and he donated much of his time speaking at MS events, encouraging individuals like himself on how to mentally and physically deal with the advancement and treatment of the disease.” No cause of death has been shared by his family.

Alan was survived by his wife, Suzanne, and their eight children, including David, who often performed with the band from 2007. He is also survived by his 30 grandchildren.

Donny Osmond

Donny is perhaps the most famous member of the Osmonds. He joined the band in 1963, aged just six. By the early 1970s, he was a teen idol and had a solo career. His debut single, a cover of Roy Orbison’s ‘Sweet and Innocent’ peaked at number seven on the US Charts. Overall, he had 18 solo albums, seven with his sister Marie, and 17 with The Osmonds, making it a total of 42 albums.

Donny has since had a long running Las Vegas residency and a talk show with Marie, called The Donny & Marie Show, which earned the pair a Daytime Emmy nomination for Outstanding Talk Show Host. He is also a Disney star, having been the singing voice of love interest Shang in Mulan, and starred as Joseph in a 1999 film version of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat.

He has continued to appear on TV. In 2009, he won Dancing With Stars, and later reappeared as a guest judge. He was also a guest judge on Strictly Come Dancing, a contestant on the Masked Singer and a co-host of the Miss USA pageant.

Marie Osmond

Marie occasionally performed with her brothers as part of The Osmonds. She and Donny would later be a pop duo and daytime TV hosts together, but Marie’s main success came as a solo country music star.

Marie has had four number one singles on the Billboard Country Music charts, including ‘Paper Roses’ which was released when she was just 14. The star has been nominated for three Grammy awards, including Best New Artist in 1974. She later joined forces with Donny for a TV show and a Las Vegas residency.

In her personal life, Marie dated Andy Gibb of the Bee Gees but later married Stephen Lyle Craig, a former Brigham Young University basketball player. The couple divorced in 1985, after having one son together, and Marie then married record producer Brian Blosil. They had seven children and divorced in 2007 after 21 years of married. Following her divorce, she married her first husband Stephen again. Marie wore her original wedding dress for their Las Vegas wedding.

In March 2020, Marie stated that when she died, she would leave her money to a charity and not her children. She said that it would be a disservice to leave her fortune to her children as they needed to make their own money.

Marie has also written several best-selling books, including Behind The Smile, about her post-partum depression, and The Key Is Love about the death of her son Michael, who jumped off an eight-floor balcony in 2010.

Wayne Osmond

Wayne was the second eldest of the Osmonds to be in the band. He was an original member, but did not have a musical career outside the band.

Instead, Wayne and his wife Kathlyn White had five children and moved to Branson, a resort city in the Ozark Mountains in Missouri. In 1997, he was diagnosed with a brain tumour. It was successfully treated but in the process, Wayne lost most of his hearing and got a cochlear implant. He still continued to perform occasionally, until he had a stroke in 2012 and was unable to play guitar. He suffered a stroke in 2025 and died aged 73.

Merrill Osmond

Merrill was also an original member of the Osmonds and was the lead singer, until he began sharing vocals with Donny. Merrill had a single independent of his brothers – a country duet with Jessica Boucher – but it only reached number 62 on the Hot Country Singles. He retired from performing in 2023.

Away from music, Merrill has vocally criticised Donald Trump, despite being a “very conservative” person. He said in a GB News interview in 2021, that he had mixed feelings about the president and tat he was never comfortable with how Trump spoke. Merrill and his wife have also served as missionaries for the Mormon Church in Washington DC in 2022.

Jay Osmond

Jay was the youngest of the original Osmonds members and the last of the OG quartet to still perform, headlining his own residency in Branson, Missouri since March 2024. He is also the writer of the the musical The Osmonds, based on the family’s lives. The musical toured the UK and Ireland in 2022 after being postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Jimmy Osmond

The youngest Osmond brother Jimmy joined the band in 1967 and has also had a solo career. His best known single is a 1972 Christmas number one called ‘Long Haired Lover from Liverpool’, released when he was only nine years old, making him the youngest performer to earn a UK number one and landing him in the Guinness Book of World Records.

He has taken over as president of Osmond Entertainment and supervises the merchandising business. With the company, Jimmy has also produced multiple programs for ABC, PBS, the BBC and Disney.

Now, according to his nephew Nathan, Jimmy is happily retired following a stroke in 2018. Nathan tole PEOPLE that Jimmy was “enjoying life as a family man”.
