Serena Williams, the tennis legend, is hogging the limelight as she is all set to return to the tennis world after nearly four years. Yes, you read it right. The 44-year-old Grand Slam singles champ will play doubles at the WTA 500 Queen’s Club event in London next week. The tournament will begin on June 8 and run through June 14. Serena received one of the two available wildcards to play in the tournament.

According to The Athletic, Serena’s partner in this tournament will be 19-year-old Canadian Victoria Mboko. It is worth mentioning that Victoria is one of the most talked-about young tennis talents. Confirming her return, Serena told the media that she is very excited to be back and competing “on one of the sport’s most iconic stages.” Amid the buzz surrounding her return, people have grown curious to know about Serena’s personal life. Serena Williams’ husband, Alexis Ohanian, was born in 1983 in Brooklyn, New York. Alexis’ mother was German, and his father’s parents had to flee during the Armenian genocide. Once in an interview with the Financial Times, Alexis shared that he felt grateful for being part of a family of immigrants who did a lot for him and gave him good fortune. He said, “I have a bit of a crush on the Statue of Liberty…I look at that every day and keep in perspective—coming from a family of immigrants—everything they went through to give me the good fortune I’ve had.”

When Alexis was a teenager, his family moved to the suburbs of Washington, D.C. He graduated from Howard High School in Maryland in 2001. At the time, he became very interested in technology. Recalling the old days, Alexis, in a 2012 profile, shared that he liked to spend more time on the internet rather than going to school. He said:

“I went to high school in Ellicott City, Maryland, and I felt pretty ambivalent about the whole thing. It just took time away from my doing things on the internet….In school, I was just a kid. Online, I had authority. My parents were cool with it, although I guess they didn’t know I was e-mailing total strangers.”

In 2005, Alexis graduated from the University of Virginia with degrees in history and commerce. During his undergraduate days, Alexis met one of the founders of Reddit, Steve Huffman and bonded with him over video games. Alexis co-founded Reddit along with Steve, and together the duo built the first version in just three weeks. Sixteen months later, the two reportedly sold the company to Condé Nast for an estimated USD 10 to USD 20 million, although Alexis still remained on the company’s board of directors. Alexis returned to run Reddit for a brief period in 2015 until 2018, when he stepped back to focus more on investing.

Serena Williams and Alexis Ohanian’s love story

Serena and Alexis first crossed paths over breakfast in Rome. They met by chance, and it was Serena who made the first move and told Alexis to sit beside her. And the rest, as they say, is history. Following her victory at the 2015 Australian Open, Serena invited Alexis to watch her play in the French Open. He was a bit sceptical at first, but later flew over to meet her. 

Before the tournament began, Serena and Alexis travelled around Paris together. It was their first official date. On December 10, 2016, the entrepreneur proposes to his ladylove, Serena. A few days later, on December 29, 2026, Serena poetically announced her engagement news. She wrote a poem and shared it on Reddit. She wrote:

“I came home. A little late. Someone had a bag packed for me. And a carriage waited. Destination: Rome. To escort me to my very own ‘charming.’ Back to where our stars first collided. And now it was full circle. At the same table, we first met by chance. But by choice. Down on the knee. He said 4 words. And I said yes.”

Serena and Alexis welcomed their first child, a daughter, Alexis Olympia Ohanian Jr., on September 1, 2017. After nearly 11 weeks, since the pair welcomed their first child, Serena and Alexis tied the knot at the Contemporary Arts Centre in New Orleans on November 16, 2017. Years later, in May 2023, Serena and Alexis confirmed that they were expecting baby number two. On August 22, 2023, the couple welcomed their second daughter, Adira River Ohanian.

However, in 2024, the much-in-love couple sparked divorce rumours. At the time, Serena’s solo appearance at the Met Gala sparked rumours about trouble in marital paradise. It was further fuelled when fans noticed Serena without her wedding ring. In fact, Serena did not share a tribute to Alexis on Father’s Day. Instead, she dropped a cryptic message, “If you are lonely, turn off the lights and put on a horror movie after a while, it won’t feel like you’re alone anymore. Try it… It works.” The couple had put rumours to rest by sharing their support on social media.
