Winx delivers third live foal as owner waits on grand news

Winx has delivered a third live foal, a filly by Too Darn Hot, as part-owner Debbie Kepitis waits on news about the legendary racehorse becoming a grandmother for the first time.

The three-part Winx ownership group announced on Wednesday that the winner of 25 group 1s and $26,451,176 on the track had given birth late on Tuesday night at Coolmore.

Kepitis said Winx and the filly were healthy, and connections were relieved.

“She was three weeks over,” Kepitis said.

“It’s great, you can scan and check the foal before they are delivered, but there’s still that worry – and it’s not like people, we can’t just induce them.

“Everything went well. She’s bounced back well and is nice and comfortable. The team at Coolmore, you never have to worry, because they watch them so well.”

Winx, which is now 15 and retired from racing in 2019 with a 33-race winning streak intact, lost her first foal, by I Am Invincible, in 2020 and has since had a filly by Pierro, a colt by Snitzel and the latest arrival.

Keptitis paid $10 million for the first filly, Quinceanera, in 2024, but she never made it to the track because of colic. She was retired to start a broodmare career and was covered in recent days by Super Seth, which Kepitis owns a small share in since the New Zealand stallion’s purchase by Coolmore this year.

“Fingers crossed she will get into foal,” Kepitis said.

“We were lucky enough to buy an interest in him, and they map well together, so we are hopeful.”

Winx’s Snitzel colt was withdrawn from the Inglis Easter Yearling Sale this year after a being injured in a paddock accident. Kepitis said no decision had been made about his future.

“He’s got another month or two of work on the water walker, then we’ll go from there,” she said.
