Hyderabad: A pet parent herself, Madhuranagar constable Nimmakuri Deepti swiftly acted on a complaint of a missing Siberian husky, Shiro. and traced the pet within 24 hours. 30 km away at a shelter. The breakthrough came when a couple that the police had spotted on CCTV footage ordered a leash online for the dog.
Shiro’s owner Anush had earlier lodged a complaint with the police about the missing pet. “I realised the depth of his feelings when Anush told me he had not eaten for three days while searching for Shiro.” Deepti told Deccan Chronicle. She alerted police stations to the missing dog and sent the pet’s picture on WhatsApp groups.
On the instructions of station house officer H. Prabhakar and sub-inspector S. Sushama, police examined footage from over 40 CCTV cameras, On Tuesday night, police sighted Shiro with the unidentified couple in SR Nagar after they ordered a leash for the dog over a delivery app. The man left shortly afterwards on a bike and the woman, after collecting the leash, booked an autorickshaw and transported Shiro to a shelter home in Moula Ali.
Deepthi and staff collected the delivery agent’s contact number and spoke with him, Prabhakar said. They then secured the couple’s number, tracked their phone and reached their house in SR Nagar. The suspect was initially not aware that he was identified in CCTV footage. Under questioning, he said he and his girlfriend had found the pet wandering and shifted it to the pet shelter in Moula Ali. He claimed they were pet lovers and had wanted to inform the local SR Nagar police about the dog.
Police informed Shiro’s owner Anush and reunited the pet and its parents at the shelter. No case was booked against the couple after police realised that their intention was to shift the pet to a shelter house safely and inform the police. “I appreciate the efforts made by the Hyderabad police for swiftly tracing Shiro,” Anush, a resident of Madhuranagar, said.
