
A 27-year-old woman, A. Shanti Kumari from Jodugullapalem, was found dead under suspicious circumstances in a lodge at Visalakshinagar on Wednesday.
Police said she had gone to the lodge with six friends for a party. During the gathering, an argument reportedly broke out and two persons allegedly assaulted her. Later, she is believed to have locked herself in a room and was found unconscious.
Friends broke open the door and rushed her to a hospital, where she was declared brought dead. However, her mother alleged that Shanti Kumari was beaten to death, pointing to injuries on her body.
Arilova police have registered a case and begun investigation. No arrests have been made.
21-year-old man gets 3-yr jail for sexually exploiting minor
A Special Pocso Court in Vizianagaram on Wednesday sentenced a 21-year-old man to three years of rigorous imprisonment and imposed a fine of ₹28,000 for sexually exploiting a minor girl. Presiding Judge K Nagamani also directed the government to provide ₹10,000 compensation to the victim, according to SP S.V. Madhav Reddy. As per the complaint filed on January 31, 2019, the accused, Peddinsetti Praveen Sai, allegedly lured the minor in the name of love, exploited her, and later threatened her using their photographs. He also allegedly threatened to end his life if she refused to speak with him. A case was registered at Parvathipuram Town police station under relevant sections of the Pocso Act. During the trial, the prosecution successfully proved the charges, leading to the conviction.
Man gets lifer for killing wife
A Mahila Court in Visakhapatnam on Wednesday sentenced a 52-year-old man to life imprisonment for murdering his wife in 2022.
VI Additional District and Sessions Judge V. Srinivasa Rao also imposed a fine of ₹10,000 and directed the accused, Davaleswaram Panchamukheswara Rao alias Eswara Rao, to pay ₹1 lakh compensation to the victim’s family.
According to the prosecution, the accused had a history of alcohol abuse and had lived separately from his wife, Satyavati, for nearly 25 years due to domestic disputes. Despite attempts at reconciliation, he allegedly continued to harass and threaten her.
On October 20, 2022, he reportedly attacked her with a knife following an argument. She later died of injuries while being shifted to hospital.
The case was registered at II Town Police Station. Following investigation and trial, the court found him guilty under relevant sections of law and awarded the sentence.
SPDCL Deputy EE suspended over corruption charges
The Andhra Pradesh Southern Power Distribution Company Limited (APSPDCL) has suspended M. Raghu, deputy executive engineer in the Madakasira sub-division of Sri Sathya Sai Circle, over multiple allegations. APSPDCL chairman and managing director Shivashankar Lotheti issued the suspension orders on Wednesday, citing charges of corruption, misuse of electrical equipment, and failure to use the departmental vehicle for transporting damaged transformers. The officer was also accused of behaving rudely with farmers and allegedly deleting 262 agricultural service applications from the system. Additionally, he is said to have shifted electrical lines at various locations without obtaining proper estimates and approvals. Based on these allegations, the CMD ordered suspension and initiated disciplinary proceedings against the official.
Students Urged to Lead Fight for Drug-Free Andhra Pradesh
AP Eagle chief Aake Ravikrishna on Wednesday called upon students to play an active role in building a drug-free Andhra Pradesh.
Addressing an awareness programme at Velagapudi Ramakrishna Siddhartha College of Engineering in Kanur, he said youth participation was key to curbing drug abuse. The event was held as part of the ‘Dandi March 2.0’, a 1,000-km yatra by the Vibrants of Kalam organisation from Tirupati to Visakhapatnam, which reached Vijayawada.
Ravikrishna said individual action can bring social change and urged students to report drug-related activities. He said the Anti-Narcotics Task Force (ANTF), operating under the name AP Eagle, has been set up to tackle the menace and appealed to citizens to share information through the helpline 1972.
He said awareness and responsible behaviour among youth are essential to prevent drug abuse and urged students to stay away from drugs, alcohol and tobacco while supporting efforts towards a drug-free state.
