Diana Vickers has opened up to fans about what surprising health condition doctors think she has after living with pain that drove her ‘absolutely mad’ for four years
X Factor star Diana Vickers has revealed she is in the process of being diagnosed with pelvic congestion syndrome after years of living with unexplained and “debilitating” pain.
The singer and West End performer, who first found fame on the ITV talent show, shared the news in an emotional Instagram video she filmed in a white fleece while holding a partially finished cup of coffee.
The 34-year-old told fans she had finally received answers about her health condition from a laparoscopy after a long struggle with severe symptoms. In the clip, Diana admitted she tried to film the update several times before finally finding the words to express how she felt after seeing the results of the surgical procedure.
She started off by saying: “Okay, here we go. I’ve tried to do this video a million times, so hopefully this one works.” Diana explained that she had been living with pain for four years and had turned to social media to share her experience, particularly because many women face similar issues that often go undiagnosed.
The My Wicked Heart hitmaker said she believes women’s health is still under-researched and underfunded, and pointed out that many patients are left without clear answers about what they are experiencing for years.
Over time, she said her symptoms included severe lower back pain, pelvic pain, leg pain and bloating. The star described this as an exhausting struggle that drove her “absolutely mad”.
Doctors had previously suggested she might have conditions such as IBS or endometriosis, and suggested a laparoscopy so they could get a clearer idea of what was happening inside her body.
After the procedure, Diana said doctors began to think she might have a condition she had never heard of before. She told followers: “Now, they spoke to me that they think that this is what they’re pretty sure that they found by looking at my veins in my pelvis.
“I’ve got something called pelvic congestion syndrome. Pelvic congestion syndrome is something found in women, and it’s when, basically, the veins in your pelvis stop working properly. They pool with blood, and they sort of wrap and twist around your ovaries, and it’s extremely, extremely painful.”
Diana said that hearing her diagnosis came as a shock, but also brought her a sense of relief after years of repeated scans and tests that didn’t reveal any obvious problems.
The star also reflected on how isolating the experience has been for her, and said she hopes sharing her story will help others who are going through similar health struggles without answers.
Diana also acknowledged she is still waiting for full medical reports but thanked her doctors and hospital team for being so supportive throughout this process.
She added: “We really really are lucky to have the NHS, just by the way. Anyway, I’m gonna stop rambling. Love to you all and thank you for listening.”
Her post quickly prompted a wave of responses from fans and fellow celebrities, and some of them spoke about going through similar experiences with being left undiagnosed despite suffering from chronic pain.
One wrote: “Not me having the same symptoms, RUNNING to google to check other symptoms and ringing my endo consultant immediately. THANK YOU for possibly solving the mystery of my reproductive system.”
English actress Kerry Howard also praised her for speaking out, adding: “Oh my god, you poor thing. I’m so glad you finally have answers. Well done for getting your diagnosis.
“It’s a shame that you had to pushed for this and you’re doctors in the past have not done any follow ups. Well done on using your platform to create awareness about this! I hope you get better xxx”
