Yankees, Red Sox clear benches in tense rivalry scene

BOSTON — A mostly docile Yankee-Red Sox rivalry got a bit of spice Friday night at Fenway Park, as the benches cleared with Boston up 4-0 in the bottom of the fifth after Willson Contreras appeared to take issue with Will Warren throwing a pitch inside.

After Contreras homered and had an RBI single off Warren earlier in the game, Contreras flipped his bat after Warren walked him on a 3-2 pitch that was close to Contreras’ elbow.

As Contreras jogged to first, he yelled in Warren’s direction and continued to torment the right-hander once he got to the bag, with first baseman Paul Goldschmidt looking to calm the situation.

But the benches cleared, although no punches were thrown and no one was ejected.

Warren got Jarren Duran to ground out to end the inning.
