KURNOOL: YSRC MLA B. Virupakshi of Alur was remanded to 14 days’ judicial custody by the Alur Junior Civil Judge on Sunday in connection with an alleged attack on a TD activist and damage to his vehicle.
Following the court’s orders, police shifted the legislator to the Kurnool Sub-Jail. Earlier in the day, Chippagiri police had taken the MLA into custody and produced him before the court.
The case relates to an alleged attack on TD activist Shekhar and vandalism of his vehicle. Based on his complaint, police arrested the MLA and 16 others. After hearing the case, the court remanded all the accused to judicial custody for 14 days.
According to police, the incident occurred late on August 1, when a clash broke out between TD activist Shekhar and YSRC supporter Giri in Sangala and Nemakal villages. The altercation left Giri and the MLA’s brother injured.
Police said that while Virupakshi was travelling to Nemakal to visit the injured, he allegedly encountered Shekhar’s vehicle, triggering another confrontation between supporters of the two parties. During the incident, stones were allegedly hurled, damaging Shekhar’s vehicle.
Following the complaint, Chippagiri police registered a case and arrested the accused.
Tension prevailed outside the Chippagiri police station after YSRC supporters gathered in large numbers following the MLA’s detention. Police deployed additional forces to maintain law and order. MLCs Mangamma and Madhusudhan attempted to enter the police station but were stopped by police, leading to a brief argument.
Alur Circle Inspector Ravishankar Reddy intervened and dispersed the crowd. Police said security had been strengthened in Chippagiri and Nemakal villages to prevent any further untoward incidents.
