Anantapur: Whirlwinds accompanied by rain hit the Anantapur city again on Saturday around 6:30 p.m.

The whirlwinds led to the collapse of a big shed inside the Anantapur Government General Hospital premises constructed for attendants of patients. Luckily, no attendants of patients had been in the shed at the time.

A donor Nagabhushan had constructed the shelter in the memory of former chief minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy for the benefit of attendants accompanying the patients from Rayalaseema and parts of adjacent Karnataka.

A security guard on duty at the spot told Deccan Chronicle that a few motorcycles parked close to the shed had been damaged. “The attendants had gone outside the hospital to get food. Otherwise, there would have been a major mishap,” the guard said.

The whirlwinds uprooted many trees and electrical police, disrupting power supply in several parts of the city. An electrical line along the JNTUA road collapsed after an uprooted tree fell on the wires. A car parked on the roadside suffered damage after a tree collapsed on it.

Many roads in Rajak Nagar, Clock Tower, and Ramnagar areas, apart from First Road and 6th Road suffered inundation due to rains that followed the whirlwinds.

Anantapur ADE Chandrasekhar said efforts are being made to restore power supply in various parts of the city as early as possible.
