Netflix film Animals is currently generating buzz on social media. The crime thriller starring Ben Affleck, Kerry Washington, Gillian Anderson, and Adriana Paz was released on October 9, 2026. Directed by Ben Affleck, Animals follows ‘Mark Kimball’ (played by Ben Affleck), whose son gets kidnapped when he is running to become the mayor of Los Angeles. Animals revolves around a wealthy Los Angeles mayoral candidate named ‘Mark Kimball’ whose life goes upside down when a kidnapping case exposes a dark web of deception. While ‘Mark’ portrays himself as a picture-perfect man, behind his polished image, he is struggling financially. His marriage to psychologist ‘Abigail’ has hit a rough patch, and the two are keeping secrets from one another.
Things begin to unravel after ‘Mark’ receives a ransom call telling him that his son, ‘Denny’ (played by Christopher Woodley), has been kidnapped. The abductor demands USD 7 million for his release and warns ‘Mark’ not to appoint any official for investigation, as he is under surveillance. For the uninitiated, ‘Mark’s’ son, ‘Denny’, had been out on Halloween and was busy doing trick-or-treating with his housekeeper, ‘Cecilia’s’ son, ‘Hector’.
To pay the ransom, ‘Mark’ no longer has any money, as he has spent a lot on his mayoral campaign. He has also used up almost all of his family savings for the campaign without informing his wife, ‘Abigail’. Later, ‘Mark’s’ manager, ‘Sam’, helps him connect with a mysterious lady named ‘Dayle Burton’ who has agreed to pay the ransom.
However, she has one condition: ‘Mark’ needs to pay another USD 1.4 million on top of the USD 7 million. However, when ‘Mark’ and ‘Abigail’ are about to contact the kidnapper about the ransom being arranged, ‘Denny’ comes back to the house. That’s when it was revealed that ‘Denny’ and ‘Hector’ were wearing the same outfits on Halloween, and by mistake the abductor kidnapped ‘Hector’ after the two got separated.
Soon after ‘Denny’ returns home, injured ‘Cecilia’ and her boyfriend, ‘Ramon’ arrive at ‘Mark’ and ‘Abigail’s’ house. They show ‘Mark’ a video of ‘Hector’, who is being held captive. The ‘Kimballs’ initially wonder whether they should pay the ransom to save ‘Hector’. However, ‘Mark’ realizes that he needs support from the Latino community to win the mayoral election. Meanwhile, ‘Mark’s’ campaign manager warns him that people will publicly criticize him if he refuses to help save ‘Hector’.
Although they are unsure what needs to be done, ‘Mark’ and ‘Abigail’ finally agree to pay the ransom to save ‘Hector’ from the kidnappers. Later, ‘Dayle’ advises ‘Mark’ that he has three options: wait for the police, pay the amount and hope ‘Hector’ is released, or kill the abductors.
‘Ramon’ decides to take matters into his own hands after ‘Mark’ tells him someone is watching them. After a chain of events, ‘Mark’ and ‘Dayle’ go to the ransom exchange spot near the LA River. Instead of waiting for the police, they decide to kill the kidnappers. While ‘Mark’ succeeds in saving ‘Hector’, ‘Dayle’ and her armed assassin, ‘Rand’, get killed by the kidnappers.
Animals ending explained (Spoiler alert)
During the rescue mission, ‘Ramon’, who was also with ‘Mark’, kills one kidnapper and saves both ‘Mark’ and ‘Hector’. However, he lets ‘Mark’ take the credit for his heroic act. ‘Ramon’ also tells the media that ‘Mark’ saved his life. This makes ‘Mark’ look like a hero and win the election.
‘Mark’ takes responsibility for the shooting and pleads guilty to accidentally firing a gun and possessing a rifle without a serial number. He receives one year of probation, community service related to firearm safety, and a USD 10,000 fine. Eventually, his turbulent relationship with his wife, ‘Abigail’, also improves. She ends her affair with a man named ‘Ron’ and decides to stay beside ‘Mark’.
