Veteran director-producer Brijendra Pal Singh, popularly known as B. P. Singh, the creative force behind iconic Hindi television shows CID and Aahat, passed away on October 27 at the age of 77. He reportedly suffered a massive heart attack after battling multiple health complications for several years.

The news of his demise was confirmed by actor and CINTAA representative Amit Behl, who worked with Singh on both landmark series. His death has prompted an outpouring of grief across the entertainment industry, with colleagues remembering him as a visionary filmmaker, a demanding professional and a compassionate human being.

An alumnus of the Film and Television Institute of India (FTII), Pune, Singh served as chairman of the institute’s governing council from 2018 to 2020. Over a career spanning decades, he played a significant role in shaping Indian television, particularly the crime and horror genres.

Beyond CID, the long-running crime investigation series, and Aahat, the popular horror anthology, Singh was associated with several other notable productions, including SuperCops Vs Super Villains, Hum Ne Li Hai: Shapath, Gutur Gu—described as India’s first silent comedy series—and the thriller web series Abhay.

Actor-musician-author Karan Oberoi, who worked with Singh on Zindagi Badal Sakta Hai Haadsa, recalled the producer as a strict taskmaster who was equally kind and supportive.

“It’s a tragic loss to the industry,” Oberoi said, recalling how he began his career with Singh in an episodic series in which he played a police officer.

Oberoi praised Singh for respecting writers, advocating for their rights and supporting talent regardless of background. He also highlighted the producer’s integrity, recalling that Singh would compensate artists from his own pocket if a project incurred losses.

Singh’s passing marks the end of an influential chapter in Indian television. His pioneering storytelling and commitment to creative talent leave behind a lasting legacy that continues to resonate with generations of viewers.
