C’garh: One More Worker Dies, Death Toll In Vedanta Power Plant Mishap Climbs To 24

RAIPUR: One more worker, injured in the April 14 mishap in the Vedanta power plant in Chhattisgarh’s Shakti district, died on Sunday, taking the death toll in the industrial accident to 24, officials said.

The worker, identified as Manish Kumar- a native of Uttar Pradesh-, died in the Raigarh Medical College Hospital on Sunday morning, officials said.

Eleven other workers, injured in the incident, were undergoing treatment in different hospitals in the state and conditions of two of them were said to be critical, officials said.

The deceased include seven labourers from West Bengal, five from Chhattisgarh, four from Jharkhand, four from Uttar Pradesh and two each from Bihar and Madhya Pradesh.

The incident occurred when the tube connecting the boiler to the turbine burst, leading to the tragedy.

Preliminary official investigation has attributed the incident to negligence in maintenance and operation.

Chief minister Vishnu Deo Sai has already ordered the Bilaspur divisional commissioner to probe the matter and submit a report within 30 days.
