Coldplay has announced plans to retire from producing new albums amid a ticket scalping controversy surrounding their upcoming concerts in Mumbai, India. The British band, set to perform at the DY Patil Stadium on January 18, 19, and 21, 2025, has faced significant backlash as millions of fans struggle to secure tickets for the highly anticipated shows.
Lead singer Chris Martin emphasized the band’s “Less is More” philosophy during an interview with Apple Music’s Zane Lowe, stating that Coldplay will limit their discography to 12 “proper albums,” having already released 10. This decision is rooted in a desire for high-quality music and a sustainable approach to their creative output. Martin noted that having a finite number of albums helps maintain quality control, making it increasingly challenging for new songs to make the cut.
The excitement for Coldplay’s first performances in India has been overshadowed by reports of rampant ticket scalping. Following the rapid sell-out of tickets on BookMyShow, many fans were dismayed to find that scalpers had purchased tickets at the original price of ₹6,000 and were reselling them for exorbitant amounts—some reaching up to ₹300,000 (approximately £750 or $1,015). This situation has prompted an investigation by Mumbai police after a complaint was filed by lawyer Amit Vyas, who accused BookMyShow of colluding with scalpers.
In response to the public outcry, BookMyShow has denied any involvement in unauthorized ticket sales and condemned the practice of scalping. The company stated that such actions are illegal in India and stressed their commitment to preventing ticket fraud.
As Coldplay prepares for their tour, Martin expressed that the band is enjoying their time together more than ever, attributing this joy to their experiences and the connections they make with fans worldwide. The “Music of the Spheres World Tour,” which began in 2022, is set to conclude in September 2025 with a final show in London.
