Hyderabad: With a rise in thefts involving domestic help, Hyderabad City Police have urged citizens to exercise caution while hiring workers and ensure proper verification to prevent crimes.
Police said a total of 565 servant theft cases were registered in the city over the past two years, including 65 grave and 500 non-grave offences. Officials noted that negligence by employers during recruitment is a major factor contributing to such crimes.
According to police analysis, IT employees, students living alone and elderly residents are among the most vulnerable targets. In many cases, domestic workers reportedly observe valuables such as gold, cash and other items left unsecured and later commit theft.
Zone-wise data showed that Jubilee Hills recorded the highest number of cases at 173, followed by Secunderabad (88), Khairatabad (77), Golconda (70), Rajendranagar (63), Shamshabad (49) and Charminar (45).
Police also warned about organised gangs from other states and countries posing as domestic workers to carry out planned thefts.
Advising strict precautions, officials said employers must collect Aadhaar or valid ID proof, photographs, permanent address and contact details before hiring. They stressed that police verification, available free at local police stations, should be made mandatory.
Residents were also urged to monitor new workers during the initial days, avoid sharing sensitive information such as travel plans or location of valuables, and ensure proper surveillance through CCTV systems and entry registers in gated communities.
City Police Commissioner V. C. Sajjanar said public participation is crucial for a crime-free and safe Hyderabad. “Criminals cannot enter without opportunity. It is the negligence of individuals that often enables crime. Proper verification and background checks must be ensured before hiring domestic help,” he said.
He also advised citizens to immediately report any suspicious activity, missing keys or sudden disappearance of domestic workers by calling Dial 100 or contacting the Hyderabad City Police WhatsApp helpline at 94906 16555.
