Gardeners’ World presenter Adam Frost has been a staple of the BBC show for years, but the garden designer has had to make many personal sacrifices in his road to success

Gardener Adam Frost, 56, stands among Britain’s most celebrated and familiar gardening experts. For many years, he’s been helping people across the country navigate the delightful realm of horticulture, offering guidance on how to keep their outdoor spaces looking their absolute best.

Beyond this, Adam has carved out a thriving career as a presenter on BBC Gardeners’ World, where he delivers expert tips to viewers nationwide.

Speaking on the Talking Gardens podcast, Adam revealed how he broke into television gardening, while also discussing his connection with the Chelsea Flower Show.

He described how he persuaded his wife to allow him to participate and demonstrate his talents as a garden designer, though she imposed a single stipulation.

Adam first met his wife Sulina during the 1990s, while she was employed as a manager at John Lewis. The couple share four children.

The presenter remembered: “We were building a national rose garden at St Albans and I somehow convinced Mrs Frost, because we turned over a lot of money.”

“We didn’t have a lot of money. I had an £18,000 retention, so they were holding back £18,000, I somehow convinced her to spend the £18,000 on a Chelsea garden. She didn’t laugh or smile, but in the end she just went, ‘If you need to go and do it, go and do it, but just make sure it’s good’.”

Reflecting on his television career, Adam revealed it evolved organically, though he harboured ambitions to return to the renowned Chelsea Flower Show. Yet concerns about the strain on his marriage gave him pause.

He explained: “And then yeah, that sort of rolled and I suppose in reality, we still self-funded, probably, the first three gardens at Chelsea, and then I started to get a little bit of interest, then we kept picking up those little gold things [medals].

“And even at the end, the tele wasn’t something that I was necessarily going to do. I did quite a lot in the industry, so I’d do a lot of talking.”

Adam added: “It sort of just naturally sort of happened really. I did my last Chelsea in 2015, promised Mrs Frost that I wouldn’t do anymore, partly because I think she was going to divorce me at that point.”

This revelation isn’t the first time Adam has discussed his wife’s perspective on his professional choices.

During a previous chat with Zoe Ball about horticultural advice, he disclosed how Sulina would occasionally tune into Gardeners’ World primarily to catch glimpses of their beloved dog Buster.

He remarked: “I cannot think of anything worse than sitting down on a Friday night and watching me walk out and say ‘Hello and welcome to Gardener’s World.’

“Mrs Frost watches occasionally because obviously we’ve got a new dog. So Buster has become the star of the show, and she’s been fast forwarding my bits just to get to the Buster bits. She says ‘Buster was really good.'”
