The Eagles were one second away from being blanked in the first half on “Monday Night Football,” but NFL — and college football — fans know well that one second can make all the difference.

Faced with a scramble to snap the ball before the clock ran out on the first half against the Bears, the Eagles decided against spiking it and instead pushed forward for their first points of the night in a wild sequence.
The touchdown partly made up for a botched goal-line operation earlier in the quarter, when Hurts missed three snaps within two yards of the goal line due to a concussion evaluation and the “tush push” couldn’t be deployed.

With the final seconds winding off the clock, most watching — and, evidently, most of the Bears’ defense — expected Hurts to try to spike the ball and set up one last play from the 1-yard line.
Instead, Hurts and the Eagles opted to take the snap and plow into the end zone for a touchdown.
Spiking the ball might only take an extra half-second, but the Eagles might not have had even a half-second to spare. Replay showed the ball was snapped with one second left, leaving no room for error as they searched for their first points of the game.
ESPN analyst Troy Aikman called the operation “amazing” as the Eagles celebrated, and coach Nick Sirianni told the broadcast that Hurts made the split-second decision to go for it right then and there.
After Hurts expressed frustration with his inability to be on the field for the end of the Eagles’ previous drive, the touchdown was undoubtedly a cathartic moment despite Philadelphia still going to halftime trailing by three.
