Paramount Pictures has released a new featurette from its upcoming film Ebenezer, giving audiences a closer look at Johnny Depp’s portrayal of the iconic Ebenezer Scrooge. The film offers a darker and fresh interpretation of Charles Dickens’ classic Christmas tale, A Christmas Carol.
In the newly released featurette, Depp shares his thoughts on playing the famously bitter and selfish character. Rather than focusing only on Scrooge’s unpleasant personality, the actor wanted to explore the reasons behind his behaviour and bring a different perspective to the role.
Speaking about his approach, Depp said, “With Ebenezer Scrooge, I was looking for a different way in than just the idea of this miserable, greedy old guy. Nobody’s born mean or with some ambition to just piss everyone off.”
The actor also discusses why Dickens’ story continues to connect with audiences across generations. While the tale explores important themes of kindness, redemption and personal transformation, Depp believes there is also room for humour.
Reflecting on the story, he added, “There are deep messages that are very profound. But at the same time I am going to see the humor in it.”
The upcoming film brings together an impressive ensemble cast, with Johnny Depp leading as Ebenezer Scrooge. Joining him are Rupert Grint, Andrea Riseborough, Sam Claflin, Daisy Ridley, Arthur Conti, Ellie Bamber, Henry Lloyd-Hughes and Charlie Murphy. The cast also includes Tramell Tillman and Ian McKellen.
Directed by Ti West, Ebenezer is written by Nathaniel Halpern and draws inspiration from Dickens’ celebrated novella A Christmas Carol. The film aims to introduce the familiar story to a new generation through a darker cinematic approach. Emma Watts serves as the producer.
Paramount Pictures’ Ebenezer is scheduled to release in Indian cinemas on November 20, 2026.
