EXCLUSIVE: The TV cook, 66, who joins Channel 4’s Great British Bake Off as a new co-judge later this year, has attributed her glowing skin to one simple ingredient

Nigella Lawson has revealed the secret behind her famously glowing skin — and it has nothing to do with Botox or fillers.

The domestic goddess, 66, who will join The Great British Bake Off as a judge when it returns this autumn, instead swears by a diet of high-fat food – and staying out of the sun.

“I’m a great believer in butter. I just eat what I want,” she told The Mirror. “I enjoy life but also I know myself. I’m not punishing myself trying to look like a model. So that’s good — I just waddle and enjoy myself.”

The bestselling cookbook author added that she flatly refuses to jump on the cosmetic “tweakment” bandwagon. “I think [good] skin is genetic, really,” she said.

“I’m also allergic to the sun so I don’t go into the sun and that makes a difference. It’s been [that way] my whole life but it’s got worse. I just can’t go in it. It’s a bore, actually.”

Skin experts say that avoiding the sun’s UV rays is among the most effective ways to keep skin looking young.

Nigella added: ‘Having a bit of fat on the face helps. I don’t do filler or anything like that. Cosmetic work is a tyranny. I just think there’s no point.”

Her perspective on ageing and gratitude for what she already has – including her health – have been shaped by the deaths of three close family members to cancer.

Her mother, society beauty Vanessa Salmon, died of liver cancer when Nigella was 25. Eight years later, her younger sister, Thomasina, died of breast cancer aged 32.

Then in 2001, Nigella’s first husband, broadcaster John Diamond – and father of her children, Cosima, 32, and Bruno, 29 – died aged 47 from throat cancer.

Speaking to us at a book launch at Nobu in central London, Nigella continued: “It would be immoral if I complained about ageing – so I don’t. We shouldn’t complain about being old. Life is precious. I’m not saying we can’t all moan about things – I think one has to be allowed to do that.”

The telly star, who was married to art collector and advertising tycoon Charles Saatchi for ten years until 2013, admitted however that balancing gratitude with life’s everyday trials is easier said than done.

“A sense of proportion is not always easy to hold onto,” she said. “Loss is something you have to bear in you.”

Nigella started filming the new series of Channel 4’s Bake Off in April, joining Paul Hollywood as a judge after Dame Prue Leith stepped down following nine series.

Commenting on her new role earlier this year, Nigella said: “I’m uncharacteristically rather lost for words right now.

“Of course it’s daunting to be following in the footsteps of Prue Leith, and Mary Berry before her – great dames, both – but I’m also bubbling with excitement.” She added: “The Great British Bake Off is more than a television programme, it’s a national treasure – and it’s a huge honour to be entrusted with it.

“I’m just thrilled to be joining the team and all the new bakers to come, I wish the marvellous Prue all the best, and am giddily grateful for the opportunity.”
