Srinagar: Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Tuesday responded to remarks made by PDP president Mehbooba Mufti regarding her recent letter seeking a unified political outreach to the Centre, clarifying that her communication created a misleading impression about the circumstances surrounding their proposed meeting.
He emphasised that the suggestion of a prolonged delay in granting an appointment was “clearly not the case,” and sought to place the sequence of events on record.
In a post shared on ‘X’, the Chief Minister explained that Mufti had personally spoken to him on Saturday to request a meeting. He noted that he had promptly informed her of his prior commitments, stating that he would be in Pahalgam on Sunday and would reconnect on Monday or Tuesday to finalise a suitable time. By outlining this timeline, Abdullah underscored that there had been no undue delay or lack of response on his part, contrary to the impression conveyed by her letter.
He further pointed out that the tone and content of Mufti’s communication suggested that she had been waiting for an appointment for “weeks on end,” an assertion he firmly rejected. According to the Chief Minister, the facts indicate a recent and ongoing exchange rather than any prolonged inaction, and he reiterated that the matter was being addressed in due course.
Addressing the public nature of the exchange, Abdullah observed that since Mufti’s letter had already entered the public domain, it would be appropriate for his response to follow a similar route. He stated that he would issue a detailed reply after consulting with his senior colleagues in the National Conference, signalling a measured and consultative approach to the matter.
The exchange highlights the evolving political discourse in J&K, particularly around the question of collective engagement with the Centre. While differences in communication and perception have surfaced, the Chief Minister’s remarks indicate that dialogue between political leaders remains open, with further clarity expected once a formal response is issued.
