VIJAYAWADA: Union minister of state for rural development and communications Dr Pemmasani Chandrasekhar cast his vote in the MPTC and ZPTC elections at his native village of Burripalem in Guntur district on Thursday. He later inspected crops damaged by cyclone Murasu.

After voting, Chandrasekhar said he was happy to return to his native village to exercise his democratic right. He described voting as one of the most valuable rights guaranteed to citizens in a democracy and said public participation was the real strength of the democratic system, irrespective of the level of elections.

He said local body elections played an important role in rural development, addressing local issues and electing people’s representatives.

During his visit to cyclone-affected areas in Burripalem, Chandrasekhar interacted with farmers to assess crop losses and understand their problems. He also sought details from officials and directed them to conduct a comprehensive assessment of the damage and submit a report to the government.

Chandrasekhar assured farmers that the government would support those affected by the cyclone and take necessary steps to ensure that they received assistance.
