Kadapa:The Telugu Desam (TD) has won the Pulivendula ZPTC seat for the first time, ending the YS family’s long-standing hold over its traditional stronghold. TD candidate B. Bharathi defeated her rival by a margin of 1,463 votes.
Pulivendula had remained a stronghold of the YS family since former Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy began his political career as an MLA. The YSRC, however, retained the Vempalle and Vemula ZPTC seats.
Of the 39 ZPTC seats in Kadapa district, 21 were elected unanimously, while polling was held for the remaining seats. The alliance parties also secured a majority of MPTC and ZPTC seats in the Jammalamadugu and Mydukur Assembly constituencies. The BJP won a majority of the ZPTC seats in Jammalamadugu.
In Kurnool district, tension prevailed during counting in the Alur constituency after officials allowed only one polling agent at a time into the counting centre, despite issuing entry passes to several agents. The restriction led to arguments and protests by the other agents. Police intervened and resorted to a lathi-charge to bring the situation under control. Two persons were injured. Meanwhile, the TD secured a majority of MPTC and ZPTC seats in the district.
In Nandyal district, tension was reported in Allagadda after miscreants allegedly set fire to vehicles belonging to YSRC candidate S. Mahboob Basha. Four vehicles were completely gutted. Police reached the spot and reviewed the situation.
The YSRC performed relatively better in the MPTC elections in Nandyal district compared with Kadapa and Kurnool. However, the alliance secured a majority of seats in Kadapa and Kurnool, while also making gains in Nandyal.
