RJ Mitte’s friend reveals how the late actor made his weakness his strength despite financial struggles
According to RJ Mitte’s friend, Craig Grove, the Breaking Bad star always stayed positive despite living with cerebral palsy. The same goes for when he struggled to find work, 13 years after the popular series came to an end. In an interview with PEOPLE, he said that RJ was super kind and thoughtful. He added:
“Just so down to earth. He was not arrogant at all. He was kind. He was humble. He thought about other people first and would talk to anyone who came up to him. He was also big about trying to promote people with disabilities in the arts and in Hollywood.”
Craig revealed that advocacy was really meaningful to RJ Mitte for most of his life. In fact, he believes that the actor “made what most people would consider a weakness into a strength.” He said that it was not only hard for RJ to find work for a long time, but he also did not receive any streaming residuals from Breaking Bad. Craig added:
“The show wrapped production a few years before streaming was even a thing, so it wasn’t written into their contracts. Think of how much money the streamers made from the show, but the actors didn’t see anything from it. Some people say that contributed to some of his struggles. He didn’t have the money people thought he had.”

He also went on to say that it was really hard for RJ since he barely had gigs come his way because he was ‘handicapped.’ And when he did land a role, RJ knew that he was typecast, as everybody only saw him as ‘Walt Jr.’
RJ had previously opened up about his much-loved role on the show in a 2016 interview, where he shared that he wouldn’t be in the position he is today without his disability. Even though it was his acting ability that landed him the role, he admitted that his disability played a major part in it. But he also noted that just like everyone else, he too went through a grueling audition process.
No matter what challenges came his way, Craig said that the late actor was determined to find work. He said:
“He was always trying to get out there and get productions going, always hustling and trying to get from one movie to the next. And he would go to Comic Con and stuff like that every now and then, which was a bit of a source of revenue.”

After RJ Mitte’s untimely death, Craig believes that the Brownsville community, where the former was highly active in promoting the local arts scene, will feel his loss for a long time. He added that RJ was a genuinely nice person and cared about everybody, including his family and his sister. He said that RJ wanted everybody to succeed, especially those who faced similar challenges like him.
