No one wears heritage saris quite like actor Samantha Ruth Prabhu. Her Instagram is inundated with weaves from across the country, often draped traditionally and styled with apropos jewellery, too. For the promotions of her upcoming Telugu movie Maa Inti Baangaram, the actor has, once again, taken to saris to make impactful appearances. She was recently spotted in a pista green handwoven design from textile designer Sourav Das’ eponymous label.
The sari is an ode to the Venkatagiri style of cotton saris that often feature small checkered patterns woven into the sari. The designer’s revivalist version is hand woven with Chanderi silk and showcases checks made of gold zari. This sari also features the Aurangabadi style of pallav (pallu) and three centimeters thick ‘chataai’ border— an uninterrupted and repeating pattern of diamond motifs in gold flanked by rows of gold triangles and striped on either side—a mainstay in handcrafted cotton saris elsewhere in the country.

Das credits Andhra Pradesh-based late artist Lakshminarayana Sattiraju’s ‘Bapu Bommalu’ style of paintings as inspiration behind the look. His signature technique of using two opposing bright colours in his artwork can be seen in the pink brocade blouse paired against the bright green sari. “Samantha carries the look very effortlessly and with grace, bringing the woven cotton sari back in style for an effortless summer,” says the designer.
Stylist Pallavi Singh, one half of styling studio Open House, accessorised the look with traditional navaratna jhumki and a pearl kaan chain from Hyderabad-based jewellery designer Madhulika Shakawat and bangles from Shri Paramani Jewels. Her makeup featured a fresh face with kohl-rimmed eyes while hair was cascading waves tied in a classic half-up half-down fashion with jasmine flowers.
