Nalgonda: Director of the CSIR-Centre for Cellular and Molecular Biology (CSIR-CCMB), Dr Vinay K. Nandicoori, has emphasised the need for farmers to cultivate crop varieties capable of withstanding the changing climatic conditions.

He was speaking at a programme at Bommayipalli in Yadadri Bhongir district to introduce farmers to scientifically developed, high-yielding and climate-resilient crop varieties and to encourage their cultivation on Thursday.

He said the CCMB centre at Bommayipalli would expand its scientific and research activities. It would create employment opportunities in Yadadri-Bhongir district and also contribute to regional socio-economic development.

Additional district collector Bhaskar Rao highlighted the importance of sustainable agriculture. Promoting use of climate-resilient, high-yielding, and diabetes-friendly crop varieties developed through scientific research, he said, would help the farmers.

District agriculture officer Ramana Reddy assured the farmers that the district administration would provide the necessary support for the procurement of the produce from these crops.

CSIR-CCMB chief scientist Hitendra K. Patel explained the unique features of these new varieties and how they benefit the farmers. He stressed the importance of taking scientific research from the laboratory to the farmers’ fields and its benefits directly reach farms.

As part of the programme, paddy seeds jointly developed by CSIR-CCMB and ICAR-IIRR were distributed to more than 150 farmers. The primary objective of the programme was to facilitate the adoption of improved crop varieties by farmers at the field level.
