Stacey once wrote a lengthy birthday post for Erick, indicating how close they were and how he was as the oldest child. In the heartfelt post, the former basketball star thanked him for making him feel the joys of being a first-time dad. He shared that he and Debi were quite young, barely in their mid-twenties, when Erick came into their life as a blessing. He wrote:

“Your mom and I were two young kids from Oklahoma and barely in our mid twenties when we found out we were going to have our first child. I remember your mom was so scared to tell me because I was just starting my NBA career here in Chicago…[As I] got the news that we were having a baby!! I was so excited I was bouncing off the wall with excitement that I was going to be a daddy!!”

Stacey recalled just starting his NFL career when his wife, Debi informed him that they were going to have a baby. According to him, that was one of the happiest moments of his life. He said that he was away for his basketball commitments when he recieved the happy news and started jumping with joy. He wanted to be “the best dad” for his little one. He labelled Erick as “the nicest and most caring” person he met, who was “willing to do whatever needs to be done to make others happy.” Stacey didn’t want Erick to ever lose that “amazing trait” of his and said he loved him dearly.

Not just Erick, Stacey and Debi loved their other kids equally. He mentioned thanking God for his four sons, Erick King, Garrett King, Brandon King and the youngest, Mason King. The kids seemed close to their dad, as they had joint photo shoots, and the late NFL legend shared them on Instagram. Their exact ages are not known; however, they might be in their teens and twenties now, as photos from 2013 show the three eldest sons as little kids and the fourth was likely not born by then. Regarding his feelings about fatherhood, he stated:

“I thank God every day for you [Erick] and your brothers.”
