HYDERABAD: Telangana has moved up two places to rank 10th in the India Electric Mobility Index (IEMI) 2025 released by NITI Aayog. The state’s score rose to 51 from 46 in 2024, placing it in the ‘Frontrunner’ category among large states. But the report said gaps in charging infrastructure are still holding back the state’s electric vehicle push.
Telangana had only 12.6 public EV charging points for every lakh registered vehicles, putting it at 12th place among states. Even with this weakness, the state improved its overall rank, showing progress in transport electrification and innovation. Among 17 large states, Telangana stood seventh, along with Tamil Nadu, Madhya Pradesh, Odisha, Andhra Pradesh, Haryana, Rajasthan and UttarPradesh, all scoring between 50 and 64.
Delhi kept the top position with a score of 84, followed by Maharashtra (78) and Karnataka (73). The index judged 36 states and Union Territories on three factors, including transport electrification progress (50 per cent weight), charging infrastructure readiness (30 per cent), and EV research and innovation (20 per cent). Karnataka topped in charging readiness with a score of 97, while Telangana’s strength in innovation helped balance its weaker charging network.
Telangana has made progress in EV adoption with tax exemptions and a `200-crore auto conversion scheme, but charging infrastructure remains a bottleneck. To boost EV use, the state must expand public charging stations, especially in tier-2 towns and highways, and mandate charges in new apartments and offices.
Converting more diesel buses to electric, supporting local EV manufacturing, and offering low-interest loans can help, observed Dr Anil Reddy, an energy policy analyst, working with Centre for Sustainable Energy Futures (CSEF).
Awareness campaigns and direct subsidies for two-wheelers will also encourage buyers. He says Telangana’s strong policy base must now focus on infrastructure, financing and public awareness to become a true EV leader and sustain its rise in the national electric mobility index and catch up with leaders like Karnataka and Maharashtra.
The report observed that the country is showing slow but steady growth in EV use. For Telangana, the task now is to fix infrastructure gaps to keep moving forward in the electric mobility journey.
