Vijayapura: Expressing solidarity with farmers facing crop losses amid a rainfall deficit in Karnataka, Bijapur City BJP MLA Basanagouda R Patil Yatnal on Saturday handed over a cheque for Rs 4.83 lakh, representing his six months’ salary, to the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund (Drought Relief) through Chief Minister’s Secretary Bhuvaneshwaraiah.

In a letter to Chief Minister DK Shivakumar, Yatnal said farmers across the State were struggling to raise crops due to the lack of adequate rainfall and adverse environmental conditions.

“I am extending my moral support to the farmers who are facing difficulties due to the drought. In this regard, I am contributing my six months’ salary of Rs 4,83,000 to the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund (Drought) for the benefit of drought-affected farmers,” he said.

During a special session convened in September to discuss the issue, the Chief Minister had announced compensation of just Rs 2,500 for each farmer’s family. Yatnal had then urged the government to announce a higher relief amount.

Yatnal had also led a large protest march last month, along with thousands of farmers, from the Siddeshwara Temple in Vijayapura to the Deputy Commissioner’s office, demanding higher compensation for distressed farmers. After submitting a petition to the State Government, he told the gathering that if the government was facing financial constraints in providing greater drought relief to farmers affected by the severe drought, he would contribute his six months’ salary to the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund.

As announced, Yatnal handed over the cheque for Rs 4.83 lakh, drawn in the name of the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund, to the Chief Minister’s Secretary on Saturday to support farmers in distress.
