Once you’ve dipped bread in salt upon entry, you’re in for a bounty of traditional dishes served in an artefact-filled space with a golden glow. The varenyky platter dazzles with jewel-green, black, and sunrise-yellow dumplings topped with fish roe, sweet caramelised onion and shards of crunchy pork.

Carpathian banosh, a Ukrainian porridge, will melt your heart with velvety, feta-laden cornmeal. Chicken Kyiv, which oozes hot herb butter when pierced, is the crowd favourite, but you’ll be equally rewarded with holubtsi: a traditional pork and rice cabbage roll in creamy tomato sauce, made to the owner’s grandmother’s recipe.

Pavlova fans need to finish with the Kyiv cake, where nutty meringue is layered with buttercream and rich chocolate ganache. Staff wear embroidered vyshyvankas, Ukraine’s iconic embroidered shirts, and can guide you through the well-signposted menu, making the whole meal feel like a delicious little treasure hunt.

Must-order: The 10-piece varenyky plate, featuring pork, cottage cheese and potato-stuffed dumplings.
