EXCLUSIVE: Jon McClure has promised to entertain the Tramlines crowd once again as he labels Sheffield the ‘home of music’ ahead of his big gig this weekend
Reverend and The Makers and Tramlines go hand in hand, but an injury scare almost scuppered the Sheffield “staple”. As the annual festival gets under way, fans will be eager for the usual high-tempo gig from Jon McClure on Sunday as he takes to the main stage.
And Jon himself can’t wait to once again entertain his home crowd. Speaking ahead of the festival, he exclusively told the Mirror: “It’s amazing, obviously. Our part of starting the festival, it’s become a staple of the city, and I think Rev at Tram Lines is always a big moment, and it’ll be absolutely wonderful to be up there again.”
He admitted Sheffield is the “home of music,” labelling it the “place to be”. “We know how to have a party,” he told us ahead of his set.
But for a moment there were fears Jon wouldn’t be able to perform after a “daft” accident left him hospitalised. He told his Instagram followers on Wednesday: “A little update from me. I had an accident yesterday doing summat [sic] daft on a scooter. It’s my own fault and I feel a bit stupid and embarrassed tbh.”
He went on: “Im just in the hozzy [sic] waiting on whether it’s a cracked rib or not.” But he promised his fans: “This weekends gigs @togetheragainfest and @tramlines will go ahead even if I have to dose myself up . Hopefully it’s just a knock.”
Sadly, he won’t have the thrilling moment he was hoping for after England’s devastating third place finish in the World Cup. He had watched on as his band’s tune Silence Is Talking made a dramatic comeback 17 years on from its release.
A revamped version had saw fans belt out “Football’s coming home again with Thomas Tuchel” to the tune of the melody. And he had high hopes of entertaining the crowd with a special rendition if the Three Lions had lifted the coveted trophy.
Speaking before England’s 3-2 victory over Mexico, Jon told us: “The geezer from England Band’s been messaging me, and he’s like, “If we win the World Cup, can we get onstage and do it with you?’
“Well, he was wanting to do it anyway, right? And I’m like, “Well, if we go out at World Cup, I don’t think anybody’s going to want to hear it, right? But if we win World Cup, get yourselves up, we’ll do it. No problems.”
This year’s annual music event, which takes place at Sheffield’s Hillsborough Park, is back with an even bigger line-up than ever before.
As well as Reverend and The Makers, festival goers will listen on as the likes of Fatboy Slim will headline, with the DJ leading the way on Friday..
The Courteeners take top spot on Saturday and Wolf Alice close on Sunday. They’ll be joined by Kaiser Chiefs on Friday, Blossoms on Saturday and Wet Leg on Sunday.
